Kids' Chance of Mississippi Scholarship Application 2026-2027

Description

Kids’ Chance of Mississippi is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides scholarships for children of workers who have been severely or fatally injured in a work-related incident. Scholarships are awarded once a year and students may apply every year for which they are eligible. Current annual scholarship amounts range from $5,000-$10,000 and are determined based on the student’s financial need.

Student Eligibility

  • Must be the child of a worker severely or fatally injured because of a workers’ compensation injury or occupational disease which is compensable under the Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Act.

  • Must be younger than 26 years of age at the time of the initial disbursement of the scholarship award.  The age limit may be extended for students to complete their program of study.

  • Must pursue a college or university degree (bachelor's or associate's) or vocational education and training (certificate or license) on a full-time or part-time basis from an accredited university, community, technical/vocational college or proprietary school. Upon completion of the primary college or university degree, the pursuit of a master’s or doctoral degree is eligible for the scholarship award.

  • Must be considered a full-time student at their post high school institution to qualify for a full monetary award.

  • Must timely submit a complete Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application with supporting documents in accordance with all Kids’ Chance of Mississippi guidelines.

The Kids’ Chance of Mississippi Board of Directors has discretion to consider extenuating circumstances in determining eligibility.

Documentation Required

  • Completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application with student, family, and university/college/technical school contact information

  • Transcript of most recent grades – unofficial transcript is acceptable

  • Copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) you received from completing the FAFSA, with your Student Aid Index (SAI), formerly called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), IF you are attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university

  • Brief description of the applicant’s education and career goals

  • Proof of compensable injury/illness claim such as determination letter, claim number, or MWCC Case Number from the Mississippi Workers’ Compensation Commission or death certificate

  • Parents’ basic employer information

Uses of Scholarship

  • Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, books, fees, room, and general living expenses.

  • Scholarships are paid directly to the school where the recipient is enrolled. Exceptions to this are allowed with a unanimous vote of the Kids’ Chance of Mississippi Board of Directors.

Deadline: May 1, 2026

For entering freshmen who would like to receive notification of a scholarship award by May 1st, a complete scholarship application and all supporting documentation should be submitted through Kaleidoscope by March 1st.

Applications received after the May 1st date will be considered on a rolling basis.

Process

Please complete the application to the best of your ability. You may need help to gather the necessary information. After initial review, the scholarship committee may contact eligible students to verify information or secure missing information. Please respond to our inquiries.

The scholarship committee will determine the strength of each application and approve scholarships as funds allow. Kids’ Chance will notify approved students of their award amount, verify enrollment, and, upon completion of the process, will send payment directly to the post-secondary institution.
