Who does Kids’ Chance of Nebraska serve?

The Mission of Kids’ Chance of Nebraska is to provide financial support to further the education of the children of Nebraska workers who have been severely injured, totally disabled or killed as a result of employment related injuries or occupational diseases. It is the goal of Kids’ Chance of Nebraska to make a difference in the lives of these children by providing scholarships to help eligible students achieve both their educational goals and their families’ dreams.


Who can apply for a scholarship from Kids’ Chance of Nebraska?

Dependents of a parent or guardian who suffered either an employment related fatality, employment related occupational disease or employment related injuries in the State of Nebraska that have had a significant adverse effect on family income who are seeking assistance to pursue higher education.


How many years can I be a scholarship recipient?

Scholarship recipients can reapply and receive funds for up to four (4) years of higher education.


What can be funded by a scholarship?

  • Proceeds can be used for vocational / technical school, junior college, undergraduate or graduate programs
  • Proceeds may be used for any educational purpose (will be paid directly to the institution).

Kids’ Chance of Nebraska is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides scholarships for children of workers who have been killed, seriously injured, or experienced a debilitating illness in a work-related incident and are determined based on the student’s financial need. Scholarships are distributed at the beginning of each semester directly to the awardee's financial institution. Students may submit a separate renewal application to continue receiving a scholarship they are currently receiving. This application is for individuals who want to apply for a NEW scholarship award from KCNE.

 

Selection Process

Student Eligibility

  • Age 26 or younger at the time of the application
  • Dependent of a worker who has been killed, seriously injured, or experienced a debilitating illness in a work-related incident
  •  Demonstrated financial need to pay for post-secondary education
  • Accepted or planning to attend a college, university, or technical school
  •  Pursuing a degree as a full-time student

 

Documentation Required

  • Complete Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application with student, family, and university/college/technical school contact information
  • Proof of compensable injury/illness and Nebraska Worker's Compensation Claim Number, if known
  • Letters of Reference, if available
  • Brief student essay describing the applicant’s education and career goals and how the compensable injury/illness/death has impacted your family
  • Proof of Acceptance at the educational institution, if available
  • Transcript of most recent grades – unofficial transcript is acceptable
  • Copy of the FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS) you received from completing the FAFSA, with your Student Aid Index (SAI) (formerly called the Expected Family Contribution or EFC) if you are attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university - as soon as the report becomes available to you.

Process

Please complete the application to the best of your ability. You may need assistance to gather the necessary information. After initial review, the scholarship committee may contact eligible students to verify information, request additional documentation or secure missing information. Please respond to our inquiries.

 

The scholarship committee will determine the strength of each application and approve scholarships as funds allow. Kids’ Chance will notify approved students of their award amount, verify enrollment, and upon completion of the process. Payments are sent directly to the post-secondary institution. Your student ID# or account # is required.

 

In general, Kids’ Chance scholarships may be used for any item included in the official Cost of Attendance, unless restricted by the state organization.
