Kids' Chance of South Carolina - Scholarship Application 2026-2027

Kids’ Chance of South Carolina is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides scholarships for children of workers who have been killed, seriously injured, or experienced a debilitating illness in a work-related incident. Scholarships are awarded twice a year and students may apply every semester for which they are eligible. Current annual scholarship amounts range from [$500 - $3,000] and are determined based on the student’s financial need.

Student Eligibility

• Between 16-25 years old at the time of the application
• Child who is a dependent of a worker killed or seriously injured in a work-related accident occupational disease with a South Carolina employer in which benefits are paid under the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Act.
•  Demonstrated financial need to pay for post-secondary education
• Accepted or already enrolled at trade/vocational school; industrial/commercial training; junior college/community college; undergraduate program at a college; or a graduate program at a college.
• Completion of the FAFSA – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid – for students attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university.

Documentation Required

•  Completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application with student, family, and university/college/technical school contact information
• Transcript of most recent grades – unofficial transcript is acceptable
• Copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) you received from completing the FAFSA, with your Student Aid Index (SAI), formerly called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), IF you are attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university
• Picture of applicant and a completed student bio. The picture should be a professional picture such as a high school senior picture.   This information will be used for advertising purposes on the Kids’ Chance website and other documents.
• Proof of benefits paid for injury/illness claim such as determination letter or CLAIM NUMBER from the state workers’ compensation board or death certificate
• Parents’ basic employer information
• Letters of recommendation (optional)

Deadline:

• June 30th - Fall Scholarships (6pm CT)
• December 31st: Spring Scholarships (6pm CT)

Process

Please complete the application to the best of your ability. You may need assistance to gather the necessary information. After initial review, the scholarship committee may contact eligible students to verify information or secure missing information. Please respond to our inquiries.

The scholarship committee will determine the strength of each application and approve scholarships as funds allow. First time applicants must participate in a personal interview with the Board of Directors at the time and date to be determined prior to being awarded the scholarship. Kids’ Chance will notify approved students of their award amount, verify enrollment, and upon completion of the process, will send payment directly to the post-secondary institution.
