Children of Fallen Workers Memorial Scholarship Application 2026
Description
The Children of Fallen Workers Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to children of fallen transportation workers to help meet their post-high school educational goals. Scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $1,000 - $5,000. The number and size of the scholarships awarded each year will be determined by the cash balance in the fund and number of scholarship applications received.
Honoring the memory of those who lost their lives while serving Caltrans and the people of the State of California.
Selection Process
Eligibility:
Applicant must be the child or stepchild of a transportation worker killed on the job and is currently enrolled in college, vocational school, or a senior in high school who is continuing his/her education.
The scholarship award must be used to attend a post-secondary school or institution. This may include any: public or private four-year accredited college or university; two-year accredited college; vocational-technical college or a training institution.
Application Information:
- Applications accepted through March 20, 2024
- Selection will be made by April 2, 2024
- Scholarship will be awarded at the Caltrans Fallen Workers Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at the State Capitol.
- If the ceremony is not held in person due to health restrictions, the scholarship check will be mailed to the recipient.
Application Requirements:
All scholarship applicants must submit each of the following:
- A completed and signed application form, which can be accessed at: http://www.transportationfoundation.org/scholarships/
- A typed essay of no more than 2 pages, double spaced, with a minimum font size of 12, explaining what receiving the scholarship would mean to the applicant and how the scholarship would make a difference in the applicant’s education and life.
- A copy of the applicant’s transcripts and/or grade report from the school currently being attended or most recently attended.
- Proof of enrollment for the post-secondary school or institution applicant is/will be attending.
- Name of parent who lost his/her life while building, operating or maintaining the state highway system. Please include the year of passing, and job title, if available.
Selection Criteria and Presentation:
All applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges on the following criteria:
- Justification presented in the essay for financial assistance 30%
- Academic performance 25%
- Leadership and participation in school activities 15%
- Volunteer activities in the community 20%
- Overall Application presentation 10%
