The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law 2026 Scholarship - LLM

Description

The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law is deeply committed to supporting law students at its Constituent Law Schools through meaningful and sustained scholarship programs. Central among these are the Foundation Scholarships, established in 1993 and funded through unrestricted resources, including awards honoring the legacy of the Foundation’s long-time Executive Director, Dave Phillips. The Foundation also administers several endowed scholarships that commemorate the lives and contributions of Dick Bate, Mary Viviano, and Chuck Moran, as well as the Legacy Scholarship Fund, which ensures ongoing educational support for future generations of students. In addition, a scholarship honoring Cassie Boggs further reflects the Foundation’s commitment to student success. The Frances Hartogh Scholarship(s) which provides living-expense support for students at Constituent Law Schools, underscores the Foundation’s dedication to reducing financial barriers and advancing legal education in natural resources and energy law.

All scholarships, except for Frances Hartogh, must be used for tuition only and must be paid directly to the student’s law school.

Selection Process

Eligibility

Law students are eligible for scholarships who will be enrolled full time at a Constituent Law School of The Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law (the Foundation) during the 2026-27 academic year, and who demonstrate a commitment to the study of natural resources or energy law, which includes for purposes of this application oil and gas law, mining law, renewable energy or electricity law, public land law, water law, environmental law, and related areas of Indian and Indigenous Peoples law, and international law. The Constituent Law Schools (CLS) are listed below. Although the number of scholarships range from year to year, the Foundation has over $300,000 to award and scholarship awards typically range from $2,000 to $15,000. Since the inception of the scholarship programs, the Foundation has awarded over $4.7 million in student scholarships.


General Criteria

All applications will be evaluated by the Foundation’s scholarship committee according to an established set of criteria that include:

  • The potential to make a significant contribution to natural resources and/or energy law

  • Academic ability

  • Leadership ability

  • Year in law school

  • Financial need

  • Foundation Student Membership (which is free)

  • Two recommendation letters
