For more than a decade, S.W.A.G. has celebrated Detroit students with heart, resilience, and promise. The S.W.A.G. Alumni Scholarship continues that mission by supporting past recipients who are still working hard, still showing up for their communities, and still striving toward their goals. This award honors your continued growth and helps you take the next step in your educational journey.

Description

The S.W.A.G. Alumni Scholarship was created to uplift and invest in former S.W.A.G. Award recipients who are pursuing post‑secondary education. Whether you’re enrolled in a graduate program, professional school, or another advanced degree pathway, this scholarship recognizes your ongoing commitment to leadership, service, and personal achievement.
One alumni scholar will receive a $10,000 award, paid directly to their post‑graduate institution to support tuition, books, or other educational expenses.

Qualifications

Qualifications
To be eligible for the S.W.A.G. Alumni Scholarship, applicants must:
Be a previous S.W.A.G. Scholarship recipient
Be currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited post‑graduate program (graduate, professional, or doctoral)
Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
Submit a short essay (up to 300 words) addressing:
How receiving the S.W.A.G. Award impacted your journey
How the alumni scholarship will support your continued educational goals
Funds will be paid directly to your institution.

Selection Process

Selection Process
All eligible applications are reviewed by a panel of judges selected by the Huntington Bank and the Michigan Chronicle. Judges evaluate each submission with care, focusing on your story, your growth, and your continued commitment to excellence.
Applications are scored using the following criteria:
Authenticity and uniqueness of your story – 50%
Clarity, structure, and writing quality – 30%
Strength of your academic standing and alignment with program goals – 20%
The selected recipient will be notified in May 2026 and honored during the S.W.A.G. Awards ceremony in June.
This process is designed to recognize alumni who continue to embody the spirit of S.W.A.G. — resilience, purpose, and a drive to make an impact.

For a decade, the Huntington Bank and the Michigan Chronicle have partnered to invest in Detroit’s young people through the S.W.A.G. (Students Wired for Achievement and Greatness) Scholarship Awards. What began as a commitment to uplift students who show promise, character, and determination has grown into a long‑standing effort to expand opportunity and strengthen Detroit’s future.

Over the past ten years, Huntington Bank has invested nearly 2 million in scholarships and education‑focused programming, helping students pursue college, skilled trades, and career pathways that align with their goals. Together, the Huntington Bank and the Michigan Chronicle continue to champion students whose stories deserve to be recognized and supported.
